A Little About Dr. Riley

I am a North Carolina native and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I received my doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and also studied educational psychology at Purdue University.

I decided early in my career to limit my practice to children and teenagers because it allowed me to specialize in their concerns in a way that just could not have happened otherwise. At my practice, Child and Family Psychology, in Newport News, Virginia, I do individual therapy as well as a range of psychological and educational testing. I do workshops for parents, teachers, and organizations on the topics covered in my books.

My books are very much parent's guides, but are also used by many mental health professionals, teachers, and physicians.  My latest book, What Your Explosive Child Is Trying To Tell You (published by Houghton Mifflin in August, 2008) is about children who have frequent explosive meltdowns and tantrums. It gives parents, teachers, school counselors, and physicians step-by-step approaches toward helping out-of-control children gain control of themselves.

Many of the parents who have read my books have appreciated the fact that I go to great lengths to explain not only why a child is acting in a particular way, but also what to do about it. I frequently get asked "When did you sneak into my house and write a book about my child?" While this is certainly very flattering, my years "in the chair" have given me a lot of ammunition to work with. I've been lucky enough to get a peek into the minds of literally thousands of children so that I have a sense of how they feel, why they do what they do, and how parents can give them what they need. To give credit where credit is due, children have taught me everything I know!

So, welcome to my website. I hope to provide parents with a comfortable place to come to for information on a wide variety of topics related to children and parenting. My style is very practical in nature: not a lot of psycho-babble but instead, real strategies that parents can use in dealing with kids.
